Gold jewelry

Soak for no longer than a minute in a solution of one part ammonia to six parts warm water. Or use a mild detergent and water. Then clean with a facial tissue or jewelry-polishing cloth. Do not use harsh or abrasive cleaning products.

Door Mats

For indoor door mats, use an upright vacuum cleaner or canister vacuum's power nozzle with a beater bar to get deep-down grit. You can hose off exterior door mats that are made to be exposed to the elements.

Ceramic Tile Grout

Grouting between tiles can stain easily. Srub it with a toothbrush dipped in a solution of one part bleach and six parts water, or use a special grout cleaner. You can also apply a grout sealer to grout so it will be more resistant to dirt and stains. Or replace existing grout with acrylic or epoxy grout, which is stain-resistant and impermeable to water and other liquids.

Washing Machines

Clean the exterior of your washing machine with a mild detergent. Leave the door of the washing machine open for a while after removing a wash load so that the interior can dry out and odors do not build up. To clean the inside of the machine, fill with cold water and about 2 cups of vinegar, and run through a full cycle.

Seashells

To clean and disinfect seashells you find on the beach, put them in a pot of water to which you've added a few drops of bleach and bring it slowly to a boil. Simmer for about 10 minutes, turn off the heat, and let the shells cool in the water. Rinse thoroughly to remove any flesh still clinging to the shells, then set them on a soft cloth to dry. Dust regularly, and wash in a solution of warm water and mild detergent if they become dirty and greasy.
